Is Snoring Hereditary? What the Evidence Says

If your parents snored, you might well snore too, but that's rarely down to one single "snoring gene". It's more a case of inheriting the physical traits that make snoring more likely.

Can you inherit snoring from your parents?

There does seem to be a family pattern to snoring. People who snore often have a parent, sibling, or close relative who also snores or has been diagnosed with sleep apnoea. This has led many researchers to look at whether snoring has a genetic component, rather than being purely down to lifestyle or age.

The honest answer is that snoring itself isn't inherited in a simple, direct way, like eye colour might be. What you inherit are the underlying physical features that affect your airway, and those features can make snoring more or less likely. So the tendency runs in families, even if there's no single gene responsible for the noise itself.

What actually gets passed down

Snoring happens when the soft tissues at the back of your throat vibrate as air passes through a narrowed airway during sleep. Several of the traits that narrow that airway have a genetic basis, which is why snoring can cluster in families.

Jaw and airway shape

The size and position of your jaw, and the overall shape of your throat and airway, are strongly influenced by family genetics. A smaller or recessed lower jaw, for example, can push the tongue further back, narrowing the space air needs to travel through. If this jaw shape runs in your family, so might the snoring that comes with it.

Nasal structure

The shape of your nose and nasal passages is also largely inherited. A naturally narrow nasal passage, or a deviated septum, can force you to breathe more through your mouth at night, which tends to make snoring worse. Tendency to gain weight around the neck

Body shape and where you tend to carry weight are partly genetic. Extra tissue around the neck and throat can put pressure on the airway, making it more likely to narrow during sleep. If weight distribution runs in your family, that can indirectly increase your likelihood of snoring too.

Soft palate and tissue structure

Some people are simply born with a longer soft palate, larger tonsils, or a floppier throat tissue structure than others. These features can be inherited and are a common, straightforward explanation for why snoring seems to "run" through a family without anyone doing anything differently.

It's not just genetics

Even if you've inherited an airway shape that predisposes you to snoring, genetics is only part of the picture. Snoring is usually the result of several factors working together, and many of them are within your control. Things like alcohol before bed, sleeping position, nasal congestion, smoking, and general fitness all play a part. This matters because it means a family history of snoring isn't a life sentence. You may have a genetic head start towards snoring, but lifestyle changes can still make a real difference to how loud or frequent it is.

When family history points to something more than simple snoring

It's worth being aware that a family history of snoring sometimes overlaps with a family history of obstructive sleep apnoea, a more serious condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This doesn't mean everyone who snores because of family traits has sleep apnoea. Most snoring is harmless, if a little irritating for anyone sharing a bed. But it's a good reason to pay attention to how you snore, not just whether you do.

When to see your GP

Family history aside, some symptoms deserve proper medical attention rather than home remedies. Please see your GP if your snoring is loud and frequent, especially if it's accompanied by gasping or choking sounds, noticeable pauses in breathing during sleep, or ongoing daytime exhaustion despite a full night in bed. These can be signs of sleep apnoea, which is treatable but does need proper assessment.

The practical takeaway

Snoring can absolutely have a hereditary element, mostly through the airway, jaw and nasal shapes you inherit from your parents. But genetics loads the dice rather than deciding the outcome. Understanding your own likely cause, whether structural or lifestyle-related, is the most useful step towards quieter, more restful nights.
